I’m about 10 rows away from finishing the sleeves on my Rusted Root, so tonight I realized that if I wanted to fix the GAPING HOLE that had formed at the shoulder, I’d have to do it soon. I don’t even know how it got there (maybe I accidentally dropped a stitch after an increase?), and at first I was just going to let it go and just stitch it up later, but then I remembered reading this post on Cara’s blog. So tonight I FINALLY mustered up the courage to fix it. I technically knew what to do, but still, it scared me a little bit to rip back all that knitting!
Here’s a quick tutorial…..
1. Knit up until the stitch in the column (?) with the hole in it. Then slowly pull the needles apart until the stitch slips down to the hole.
2. I repeat: Go slowly!
3. When you get to the stitch above the hole, carefully unhook it, and then quickly…
4. Slide a crochet hook into the stitch below it, and then grab the loose stitch from behind (above). 
5. Pull the crochet hook down and through the stitch below.
6. Repeat this process all the way back up to the top. 
7. Stand back and admire your accomplishment!
8. And revel in your awesomeness.

I’m impressed. I’m reminded of the time that Grandma used a pair of scissors to cut out a 10″ band of knitting from a pullover sweater (which was being knit by a neighbor of mine for her husband, while I was at NIU) and knit the bottom of the sweater back onto the top of the sweater, resulting in a sweater that fit perfectly. Grandma said that the young woman almost fainted when she asked her for the scissors. Sounds like you are on the way to being Grandma’s equal in knitting repairs as well as in knitting projects.
